Architect, Dann Norris Batting's New Eco Firebox

We’re very excited to be working with Dann and Susan Batting of Chester NH. One can see a snap shot of their magnificent work around New England and abroad at Dann Norris Batting Architecture.

Having seen many fireplaces I am always amazed at the size of early American fireplaces. With a throat opening of almost 80″ Dann and Susan said one would need to hold on to there hat when a fire and its massive draft was in operation.

Unfortunately this type of draft and fireplace combination can be a double edge sword by creating far more than 5 house air changes per hour (the average open fireplace air change rate) making it difficult to impossible to generate any real heat for the home.

Here’s a few first draft Urban designs, color and texture and other features like a floating hearth and other design elements has yet been chosen. The original firebox is so large the entire Urban heater with one heater cube can fit inside.

  1. what a great concept, i have had a woodstove as my only source of heat for the last 12 yrs in acabin we have in the redwoods, this seems like the next generation to the wood stove...how much wood would you need to burn tyo heat a 2000 sq ft home...lets say the log is 16/18" long with a 8" width that was quartered, so the wood mass is defined... also do you have outlets in the ny area? good luck with a great concept!
